This week Pt O’Connor, again, hosts the 43rd annual POCO BUENO fishing tournament. The POCO is, well, it started as an offshore tournament and then expanded into an inshore division, the crown jewel of Texas tournament fishing.
Held in Pt O’Connor, TX the Poco was originally, and to this day, run by the Fondren family from Houston. Pt O’Connor is about 170 miles from either Houston or Austin and is usually a sleepy fishing village, except for the week the POCO comes to town.
Held at Caracol, www.caracolcoastal.com, the bays and marshes have changed little in topography since the days of the Karankawa Indians, or the explorers, La Salle or Cabeza de Vaca. Sure, an increased population has put more pressure on fishing, but the bays and the scenery is much the same as 400 years ago.
So, Austinites, if you don’t know about the POCO, or about Pt O’Connor, you should. The POCO is glamorous, exciting and fueled with cash. From big offshore boats to reels worth thousands to huge cash pots the POCO is certainly the most prestigious fishing tournament in Texas.
The offshore division will limit the entrants to 100 boats. The Calcutta can easily run into the millions of dollars and the winner, which is usually decided by the largest blue marlin (last year the winning fish weighted 450 lbs) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slPwAuC3MrY, can take home a huge portion of the prize money. Money aside, the bragging rights to winning the POCO are legendary among offshore anglers.
The Calcutta is Wednesday night, and fishing starts Friday morning at 12:01 a.m., but most boats usually leave the dock on Thursday evening. The weigh-ins could happen any time in between, but a lot of the boats wait until Saturday afternoon to weigh their fish as they have been offshore all night and have not returned to the docks.
There is a lot of excitement, a lot of party, a lot of sun and salt to be had in Pt O’Connor this weekend. And if you are looking for a summer home you should check out Pt O’Connor’s new developments, the Sanctuary and Caracol, or the many individual resales inside the old coastal city originally titled Alligator Head.
